City Facts
• Currently, more than half the world’s people live in cities. Fifty years ago, that figure was less than a third. By mid-century, more than two-thirds of the global population will reside in urban centers
• In London alone, children speak more than 200 languages, and more than 40 percent of schoolchildren speak a language other than English at home
• Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, grew from 1 million to more than 17 million in 50 years. About 97 percent follow Islam. Christians make up only 2 percent.
• In Dongguan, China, home to 3,000 factories, 10 million 17-35-year-olds are away from the strongholds of their culture back home; most return to their villages by age 35.
• More than 99 percent of Japanese still do not know Christ. More than 4,000 people in Tokyo alone are homeless.
• Human trafficking claims an estimated 27 million victims in cities around the world, 80 percent for sexual exploitation. In South Africa alone, one in four girls faces the prospect of being raped before the age of 16.
